BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Under a set of white tents at the U.S.-Mexico border in Brownsville, Texas, dozens of Venezuelan men waited. Some sat on curbs and others leaned on metal barricades. When the gates eventually opened, the long line of men filed slowly up the pedestrian pathway to the bridge and across the Rio Grande River to Mexico.

In the past few weeks, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have been facilitating these expulsions three times a day as roughly 30,000 migrants, mostly from Venezuela, have entered the U.S. in this region since mid-April. That’s compared with 1,700 migrants Border Patrol agents encountered in the first two weeks of April.

In the other end of the state, in El Paso, officials are dealing with another surge of migrants and worry that thousands more are waiting to cross.

All this comes as the U.S. is preparing for the end of a policy linked to the coronavirus pandemic that allowed it to quickly expel many migrants, and it spotlights concerns about whether the end of the immigration limits under Title 42 of a 1944 public health law will mean even more migrants trying to cross the southern border.

A closer look

On May 6, 2023, the U.S. State Department will release the winners of the Fiscal Year 2024 Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery. On that date, foreign nationals who entered the lottery can visit the official Entrant Status Check website to learn whether they were selected to submit an application for permanent residence.

Lottery results

If you entered the FY 2024 lottery, the only reliable way to learn whether you have been selected is to visit the official website and enter the confirmation number of your entry, along with your last name or date of birth and a randomly generated authentication code. The State Department does not send direct notifications to lottery winners, so beware of emails, letters, or other communications that claim you have won the lottery; they are likely to be fraudulent.

If your lottery entry was selected, the Entrant Status Check website will provide information on how to proceed with an application for permanent residence. Individuals selected in the lottery are eligible to submit an application for adjustment of status or an immigrant visa application during FY 2024, which begins on October 1, 2023 and ends on September 30, 2024. If your entry was not chosen, the status check website will state that fact.

For FY 2024, the State Department will make up to 55,000 immigrant visas available through the DV lottery. Foreign nationals submitted their lottery entries online during a designated time period. The filing period for the FY 2024 lottery ran from October 5, 2022 to November 8, 2022.
